After losing her family in a crowd of refugees in Shanghai port in 1941, Irene, a young half-Russian, half-American, becomes a nightclub dancer, but soon is taken to an interment camp. She is forced to rely on a Japanese officer, who is in love with her and finds herself at his mercy in this new solitary world. Ten years later, she lives as his official lover and a member of an influential Japanese clan. One day she discovers that her family survived the war. She has to make choice between her precarious gaijin life and the seemingly reanimated past.
