Codename Chessmaster is a smart and methodical project manager for the CIA but his career has stalled for seven years since the large-scale failure of the Agency’s most expensive project, Caprice. Now based in Venezuela, Chessmaster has found overwhelming evidence regarding the presence of a mole within the Agency. Chessmaster hasn’t been promoted since Caprice and doesn’t have access to information to track the mole. He reaches out to his former lover and mentor, Senior Officer Georgia Standing. Standing can track the mole but needs someone else to rescue Chessmaster, now imprisoned in Venezuela. She turns to a man she has been trying to find for seven years, the man who brought down Project Caprice, Reagan Lee. Lee was recruited by Chessmaster and Standing and holds a grudge against them both—his reason for destroying Caprice. Lee has reluctantly agreed to help, however Standing isn’t sure she can trust him. Afterall, the Agency considers him the most dangerous man alive.
