"Mal, I have something very important to ask you. What are your feelings for Mandy? Now listen this is very important a lot is hanging on what you tell me, okay?"
Mal looked concerned at Mavis' serious face. "Okay Mavis, I'm crazy about her. I can't get her out of my mind. I know that I'm in love with her, but she keeps pushing me away. She says she likes me a lot, but because she thinks of me as her boss she thinks we shouldn't be too close."
"Thank you for confirming what I thought. The thing is I think she is in love with you too. Now listen carefully. What would you do if Mandy was pregnant? Would you send her away?"
"Good lord. Mavis what are you saying? Is she pregnant?"
"Mal, if she was, would you send her away?"
"No, of course not. I love her and if she loved me as much as I love her, I would love her child as well. You know I love children."
Mavis now had tears in her eyes. "Good. Now listen again. You remember when I told you she was attacked by that Campbell Connors. It was worse than I thought. She was raped by him. Unfortunately she hadn't any birth control pills at the time. So she is probably pregnant. The symptoms are all there."
"Mavis what do I do now? How can I help her?"
"I don't want you to mention anything about this to her for now. She is too upset. She thinks you will not want her here when you know. Tomorrow morning she will take the pregnancy test and then we will know. If it is not that then we need to get her to a doctor and have her checked out."
"Okay. But it will be hard not to say or do anything that will make her suspicious that I know about this."
"It won't be easy. However, I don't think she will come down for dinner tonight. I will take a tray up to her and she can have it there. In the morning we will know more. So not a word to anyone, okay?"
"Fine Mavis and thank you for telling me what has happened. The thing is; I hoped to eventually ask her to marry me. Do you think she will have me now?"
"Oh Mal, I know this is hard. If we can help her see a few simple truths maybe she will come round. We can only wait and see and give her all the support we can."
